Classy!

Just came from an excellent Aperture Workshop at the Apple Store! I learned so much more about all the different options, stuff I always wondered what they did but didn't want to blow up my pictures. I hope this is the beginning of more Aperture classes at my local store. Oh yeah, and it was free. Apple rocks!

Dead iPod walkin'

  • Jan. 3rd, 2009 at 10:07 PM
bitch plz, master
I schlepped all the way out to the Apple Store for nothing, but at least I don't have to wonder what's going on with my iPod any more.

The LCD is dying, basically. And it's out of warranty or else they would have just replaced it. My official Apple Store options are to replace this exact unit, which would cost about $150-160. Or I can return it to Apple for 10% off a new one.

Or... I can wait for the rewards I racked up with my Amazon card -- $25 gift certificate and $100 cash -- and buy this!
This! )

Eight Days: Day Eight

Let's see. I'm happy that Aperture is now working on my new MacBook Pro again. I'm not happy that I had to drive all the way out to the nearest Apple Store (40 minutes), spend another 15 minutes looking for a parking space, get told that they can't do much for me because Aperture is a pro application, then drive home. But it's working.

I'm happy my dinner experiment worked out not too badly.

I'm happy KO isn't sick and is on F'nIA tonight!

I'm happy I did this meme. I should try to think of something happy-making every day. It's good for me!

Happy Halloween! Or if you prefer, blessed Samhain!

I took yesterday afternoon off to go to a iMovie workshop at the Apple Store. So now I'll actually know what I'm doing when I make a movie! I may need to shoot some more footage and make more movies. Watch this space!

Today I used my comp day for working on Saturday the 11th. So I'm at home, in my sweatpants and Nightmare before Christmas sweatshirt, watching horror movies all day! First up, House of Usher (1960). I'll check in later!

Apple does the right thing

  • Oct. 24th, 2008 at 5:49 PM
isn't he the cutest thing
Oh, Apple. Like I needed another reason to heart you guys.

Apple has joined Google in publicly opposing a California ballot initiative that would deny marriage rights to same-sex couples.

The company announced Friday that it would donate $100,000 to the No on Prop 8 campaign, which opposes a measure to ban gay marriage that California voters will consider a week from Tuesday. Google has also spoken out against the ballot measure.

"Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees' same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person's fundamental rights--including the right to marry--should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8," the company said in a statement posted to the Hot News section of its Web site.

Big hard drive? Or BIGGEST hard drive?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOH. Just saw the new 15.4" MacBook Pro online.

That thing is sex-ay.

A 2.4 GHz model with 4 GB RAM, a 250 GB super-fast (7200 rpm) hard drive, and AppleCare "only" comes to $2600. Which is less than the money that's been percolating in my six-month CD in anticipation of this very day!

But they also offer a 320 GB drive with the 7200 rpm! That is i-normous!!! Do I really need such a ginormous hard drive? Well, if I keep shooting in RAW and making 10 MB files every time I take a photo, that could definitely add up. (I absolutely want the 7200 rpm drive, to make faster updates in Aperture, and also for getting more into video editing.)

Aw, Aperture is going to run like melted butter on this thing.

I'm still going to wait a liiiiittle bit longer. First of all, my CD doesn't mature until October 30 anyway. Then I want to see if there are any manufacturing problems with the first version. Then I have Thanksgiving to plan for! Maybe I'll try and time it so that it arrives Thanksgiving weekend. Then I can eat turkey samwidges and set up my new laptop.

Yeah. I'm a planner. Hee hee hee!

Finally!

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is trying to polish its bruised performance with shiny new products.

On Thursday, Apple confirmed speculation it would be holding a media event Tuesday that focuses on notebook computers. The company is widely expected to unveil new versions of its Macbook and Macbook Pro notebook computers that cost below $1,000.

The Cupertino, Calif., computer maker is also expected to take the wraps off a new manufacturing process that carves a computer from a single piece of metal. The process is expected to significantly reduce Apple's manufacturing costs.

Please to be releasing the iPhone/iTouch 2.0 firmware soon, or else I fear my husband may explode with the excitement.

We spent ages last night watching Mythbusters reruns and browsing the new Applications store in iTunes. There is some amazing stuff available already! On the FIRST DAY. Eat it, Micro$oft.

We get our iPhones next February, when our Verizon contract expires. THAT WILL BE WICKED AWESOME. Plus, all the kinks will be worked out.

Thought roundup

  • Apr. 24th, 2008 at 3:05 PM
cat excuse me
In the form of the bullet!

  • I was putting some bottles in the wine fridge this morning (w00t~!), and I noticed a tuft of cat hair on the bar countertop. The cats are obviously conducting their own building inspections. I hope we're up to code!

  • I reiterate: kitties are not digging the "get locked up in the bedroom all day" routine. And of course if the door were open, they'd still spend 90% of their day in there! It's just the closed door they object to. But I don't care what they think. Until all the contractors and subcontractors hand me back their spare keys and I can be assured that no one else will be coming in and out of the house when we're not there, the cats stay sequestered in the bedroom during the day.

  • Speaking of the remodel: stuff in the kitchen works! Like last night, I unpacked the microwave stuff and set up the little plate, and found a place to store the convection rack. (Ooooh fancy!) I ran it at very low power for 30 seconds. You know, just to make sure the plate was in right and able to move. And it works! Today we turned on the hood, and it's got 4 nice bright 50 watt bulbs in there. The fan is... kinda loud. But if you turn it down to 2 (out of 6), it's manageable. If I'm watching TV while I'm cooking and running the fan, I'll be very glad for those two speakers installed in the kitchen ceiling. I started putting in oven racks, but it feels too loose. Need to find the manual and make sure I'm doing it right.

  • I'm wearing an inexpensive brown T-shirt I bought at Target a couple weekends ago and my new beige skirt. I look decent and am very comfy! I must go snag more of these cheap and cheerful shirts.

  • Just saw a headline go by: "Unlike 1Q, Apple shares rise after 2Q report." Translated: when Charity buys Apple shares, she gets a decent earnings report but the stock tanks anyway. After they claw back up to a reasonable level, she sells them to Hubby, who then gets a hhhhhhawesome earnings report, and they go sky-high. Eh, whatevah. I am clearly not cut out to own individual stocks. I will stick to mutual funds. Or bonds.

  • But yeah, so I got my Apple stock money back, and my 6-month CD matures next Friday. So when they announce the next release of the MacBook Pro, I am ready, baby! I figure they'll do a refresh in time for the back-to-school buying crowd. I'll wait till November or so to let them work all the kinks out, then SNAG!!!

  • Today was "Bring Your Young'uns to Work Day." Remember when the whole idea of it was Bring Your Daughter to Work, so she can see different roles for women so she doesn't have to stick to "nurse" or "teacher" or "mommy" as a career path? Yeah, so that lasted. My company actually has organized programs for the kids now, and they shuffle them off to the auditorium or something so you hardly see them. This is a vast improvement from when it was just an excuse for the kids to eat all our cookies and download South Park cartoons at their mothers' desks. (Tru fax, saw that with my own eyes.)

  • Dr. H and Dr. M back-cracked me yesterday. I consistently have tightness and issues with my mid-back, so I got the office ergonomics guru to give my desk a makeover. So he's got my chair rearranged now. It's weeeeird. Not bad, just weeeeird.

  • Wanna hear something that sucks? Next month Hubby has to fly down to Tampa for a meeting at 1 p.m., then turn around and fly home! I mean, he prefers not to have to go away overnight and all, and there is value in face-to-face meetings. But doesn't that seem like a huge waste of money!? Not to mention an e-nor-mous pain in Hubby's posterior.

  • I'm sneezing and blowing my nose like a mofo today. Hard to tell if it's the cold or allergies compounding the problem. Although I am grateful that the sore throat has finally! passed. Hopefully this won't last much longer.

  • I do see my doctor next week, but that's because I need a new scrip for Wellbutrin. Even though it hasn't helped much lately with not overeating, I think I should stay on it. When I read that story a few weeks ago about Cabinet-level members of the administration sitting in on torture meetings, I literally got depressed. I had to shut off the TV and go to bed. Coincidentally, I had been alternating days on with days off, to try and get off it. After that, I was like, "Oh yeah. We're keeping it." I'll be interested to see what the doctor says.

  • 3 shots of decaf espresso + large cup full of ice = free iced coffee at work. Take that, Starbucks!

  • So glad I'm getting my hair cut on Saturday. It's becoming bushy, and no matter how much effort I put into blow-drying, I still look like a little Dutch boy with a bowl haircut by the end of the day.

  • Back to remodeling news: we're meeting with a lady next Wednesday. She's a friend of Georgie's and does cool things with framing and mounting photographs. We're going to have a bunch around the 2nd floor, including two super huge ones on the dining and living room walls.

  • To those of you on my F-list who need it, just know I'm pulling for you.

  • And finally, boom de yada!

We're back from visiting the fam! I'll write more later about our visit, but just wanted to do a quick link dump:

  1. Log Cabin Republicans: all the self-interest plus extra self-loathing!

  2. For you Macsters out there: tweak your GMail IMAP and Mail.app settings.

  3. Has anyone heard of the New York Institute of Photography? I've decided that I need some serious education if I want to progress with my photography. I picked up a copy of
    Shutterbug
    magazine
to read on the plane on Wednesday, and I didn't understand half of what they were talking about. It was kinda depressing, really. This NYIP thing may be a way to start.

YAY! New bigger Apple iPhones and Touches!

  • Feb. 5th, 2008 at 8:39 AM
macface
From a press release issued this morning:
CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today added new models of the iPhone(TM) and iPod(R) touch which have double the memory, doubling the amount of music, photos and videos that customers can carry with them wherever they go. The revolutionary iPhone now comes in a new 16GB model for $499, joining the 8GB model for $399. iPod touch now comes in a 32GB model for $499, joining the 16GB model for $399 and the 8GB model for $299.

"For some users, there's never enough memory," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod and iPhone Product Marketing. "Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world."
Wow, I can't believe waiting actually paid off! I'm going to wait until Amazon is stocking the 32GB Touch, and then I can use my $25 gift certificate, plus rack up 3 times the points on my Amazon Visa.

Now guys, all I need you to do is soup up the MacBook Pro chipset! C'mon, I know you can do it.

I am a stockholder! I bought 10 shares of AAPL at $154 each. Well, Hubby bought them through his Vanguard account, and I will reimburse him. The price was just too low to let it go by. I'm sure it'll be back in the $180's in no time.

So everyone run out and treat yourself to a new iPod. "Treat the wife. Treat someone else's wife." Or a MacBook! Or a MacBook Air. Take two, they're small!

My MacWorld keynote thoughts

  • Jan. 15th, 2008 at 1:40 PM
macface
(Newest updates at the top) Reading the blog at ArsTechnica, crossed with CNBC's live blog and Bl00mberg news updates.

1:39 pm EST: Annnnnnd... that appears to be it. OK, so nothing really shocking. That Time Capsule thing sounds cool, especially for multi-Mac households like mine. Hubby thinks this would be a good thing for us to get too. 500GB for $300 sounds like a good deal to me. What'd you think?

1:33 pm EST: Heh, both blogs I'm watching are like, "No 'one more thing'?"

MacBook Air does sound pretty nifty! Seems like the perfect thing to tote to class, or to a meeting. This "Remote Disk" thing where you can "borrow" another local computer and install from their CD/DVD drive is particularly nifty!

The Simpsons movie will be on iTunes to rent as of tomorrow!

Who's going to want to watch YouTube videos on a big screen TV? Yuck.

Apple TV, take 2? No more hardware? This may work for us in our new entertainment system. Hubby will have to take a look.

Renting movies: no surprise there. Only 24 hours to watch? Booooooo. Decent pricing though.

New iPod Touch firmware: yes!!! My waiting to buy one has been justified! Free firmware upgrade!

"iPhone in its first 90 days of shipping garnered almost 20 percent marketshare of smartphone market", "200th day since the iPhone went on sale today, "I'm extraordinarily pleased to report that we have sold 4 million iPhones to date." -- That's pretty damn nifty.

Time Capsule: a dedicated wireless backup device solely for doing Time Machine backups. And you can back up more than one Mac. I like this idea.

Ooh, feel the excitement! There's a cool list of all the blogs liveblogging the keynote, which starts iiiiin... 23 minutes!

I may have to watch the Fake Steve Jobs blog. I expect that to be hilarious!

OK, really? All I want is a souped-up MacBook Pro, to give me an excuse to buy a new laptop. I want some hard-charging Intel Megamega chipset in a shiny shiny silver case. Anything else is gravy. I'm sure not buying an iPhone until they actually hook up with a decent provider. I'm very proud that I've restrained myself from buying a Touch so far. (Would that I could apply such amazing restraint to my diet.) Maybe my patience will be rewarded, and an even cooler Touch will roll out!

Hubby's plane arrived in New Orleans about 9:30 EST. Once he got settled into his hotel room, he signed up with the hotel Internet access and video-iChatted me!

We talked for a little over half an hour. The kitties were rustling around in the background. I tried to let them hear Daddy talk to them, but they weren't into it.

I love the video iChatting. It makes him feel not so far away.

iPhoto fails me

  • Dec. 17th, 2007 at 10:14 AM
eccleston wtf
All I wanted was a simple little desk calendar. But iPhoto only has big wall calendars, which won't work on my teeny little cubicle! So I had to go to Shutterfly instead. And actually they don't have desk calendars either. What you have to do is:
  1. make an album with the photos you want

  2. apply a border to each photo, one by one with each month

  3. arrange them in the correct order

  4. order a Snapbook, in either 4"x6" or 5"x7", with the little wire binding on the top
Geez, is making a desk calendar really that complicated?

I also saw VistaPrint had a desk calendar option, but I've ordered from Shutterfly in the past and been OK with their products.

C'mon, Apple, get it together for next year and expand your photo product offerings. If anyone can design an attractive desk calendar, I know you can.

Awesome Leopard feature

  • Dec. 16th, 2007 at 3:30 PM
macface
Leopard has this Screen Sharing feature which has become absolutely essential. As you may or may not know, we have three Macs in our house:
  1. Hubby’s MacBook Pro, upstairs in his office on the top level of our townhouse
  2. My MacBook, most often used down here in the recroom
  3. The mac mini, on which we run EyeTV for TV and DVR’ing
I use Screen Sharing between my laptop and the mini all the time. I use it to set up TV shows to record, to move files from the mini to the network drives, to choose movies to watch, to search for and start downloading torrent files. Not only do I not have to get my lazy butt off the couch, the screen is even easier to read on my laptop.

EyeTV lets you edit commercials out of videos you’ve recorded. I was iChatting with Hubby and saying I couldn’t figure it out. He asked, “Would you like me to Screen Share and show you how to do it?” Sure!

So he and I started an audio iChat between his laptop and mine. Then he Screen Shared the mini up on his MacBook Pro, and started editing the file. I watched for a while, then I took over with the mini. It made training soooooo easy.

I can’t wait till his parents have Leopard installed, so we can troubleshoot their iMac over iChat!
