fall autumn leaves

Eh... not so much

Change has come to America

Sigh. I love Sarah Vowell

From Saturday's NY Times. The whole thing is wonderful and awesome and snarky and heartwarming in Ms. Vowell's inimitable fashion:

ON Monday night at the Democratic National Convention, Caroline Kennedy introduced a tribute to her uncle, Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, by pointing out, “If your child is getting an early boost in life through Head Start or attending a better school or can go to college because a Pell Grant has made it more affordable, Teddy is your senator, too.”

To my surprise, I started to cry. Started to cry like I was watching the last 10 minutes of “Brokeback Mountain” instead of C-SPAN. This was whimpering brought on by simple, spontaneous gratitude.

I paid my way through Montana State University with student loans, a minimum-wage job making sandwiches at a joint called the Pickle Barrel, and — here come the waterworks — Pell Grants. Thanks to Pell Grants, I had to work only 30 hours a week up to my elbows in ham instead of 40.

Ten extra hours a week might sound negligible, but do you know what a determined, junior-Hillary type of hick with a full course load and onion-scented hands can do with the gift of 10 whole hours per week? Not flunk geology, that’s what. Take German every day at 8 a.m. — for fun! Wander into the office of the school paper on a whim and find a calling. I’m convinced that those 10 extra hours a week are the reason I graduated magna cum laude, which I think is Latin for “worst girlfriend in town.”

Twenty years after my first financial aid package came through, I have paid off my college and graduate school loans and I have paid back the federal government in income taxes what it doled out to me in Pell Grants so many, many, many, many times over it’s a wonder I’m not a Republican.

But I would like to point out that my perfectly ordinary education, received in public schools and a land grant university, is not merely the foundation on which I make a living. My education made my life. In a sometimes ugly world, my schooling opened a trap door to a bottomless pit of beauty — to Walt Whitman and Louis Armstrong and Frank Lloyd Wright, to the old movies and old masters that have been my constant companions in my unalienable pursuit of happiness....

...I am a registered Democrat. That first night’s convention speech by Senator Kennedy about his life’s work reminded me what being a Democrat means. I have spent the last eight years so disgusted with the incompetent yahoos of the executive branch that I had forgotten that I believe in one of the core principles of the Democratic Party — that government can be a useful, meaningful and worthwhile force for good in this republic instead of just an embarrassing, torturing, Book of Revelation starter kit....

Be back soon!

Edited to add: *sigh* Awesome stuff. I don't think he missed a single thing I care about.

On a completely shallow note:

Those Obama kids KILL me. That Sasha is a pistol, and I think she likes playing with Joe B's grandkids!

Did you notice how all the Obama women were coordinated with each other, and with Barack's tie? Scrumptious.

Joe Biden is so obviously crazy about his wife, which I TOTALLY LOVE.

And with an outdoor stadium, you can have FIREWORKS. Perfect!

Sen. Kerry gives an excellent speech. No, seriously!

He did so well last night. He makes excellent points. Kudos! And a note to the Democratic "campaign handlers": quit handling the shit out of your candidates, let them make speeches like this every once in a while, and maybe we'd actually win some elections now and again!

Remember all those yahoos who were praying for rain to wash out Obama's convention speech tonight in Invesco Field?

Yeah, looks like it worked real well so far.

Does that mean God is on the side of Obama?

Or does God just ignore bigoted idiots?

Either way, hallelujah!

You HAVE to watch this, so exciting!

Balloon Juice re our Dr. Maddow
rachel will stop you right there
[info]eh_notsomuch
Why Rachel Maddow is Smarter than 99% of The People On Television
One quote:

Unlike Olbermann, Maddow plans to interview some conservative guests. But she is determined to avoid the left-right pairings that sustain much of cable news.

“It creates fake balance,” she says. “I’m sorry—we’re going to have a debate about whether or not the Earth is flat? It doesn’t make sense to have a debate about whether offshore drilling is going to bring down gas prices. You know what? It’s not. The fact that it’s false ought to be reported, or you’re advancing a lie.”

The reason our news is so bad is because of this artificial concept of balance, where we have to present both sides, even if one is batshit crazy.

BTW- MSNBC’s coverage of the convention has been absolutely horrid so far. Other than a few moments with folks like Rachel, Pat Buchanan, and Michelle Bernard that have been passable, the rest of it, from the network bigwigs, has been deplorable. Olbermann, Brokaw, Gregory, Mitchell, and Matthews have all been terrible, and the fact that they think it is more important to hear them prattle on and on endlessly about, well, nonsense, rather than listening to the convention speakers should prove one thing- bad coverage is bad coverage, even if it is brought to you by folks on “your side.”
Can't wait for September 8!

ETA: Jezebel is also in the tank for Rachel. Huzzah!

Nicely done

Governor Brian Schweitzer is bringing the HOUSE DOWN. He is ten times better than Warner was, and Warner wasn't bad!

I predict we will hear more from this gentleman. I like what he has to say, and I would like to subscribe to his newsletter.

This time, it really is OK when a Republican does it

Anyone else see former Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa) speak at the DNC last night? While he didn't exactly set the place on fire, I liked his calm reasoned speech. So did Steve over at Washington Monthly:

LEACH GETS THE SHORT SHRIFT.... Last night, DDay asked a very reasonable question: "If a 30-year Democrat spoke at the RNC, excoriated his former party, and endorsed the Presidential candidate of the opposite party, would the media cover it?"

DDay was referring, of course, to former Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa, a respected, long-time Republican lawmaker who not only endorsed Barack Obama, but appeared at the Democratic convention last night to urge others to follow his lead.

This development barely generated any attention at all. When Zell Miller appeared at the Republican convention, it was a key development. When Joe Lieberman, who isn't even a Democrat anymore, announced his own appearance at the GOP convention, this was a major story. Some former Democratic delegate in Wisconsin moved inexplicably from supporting Clinton to backing McCain, and her switch is treated as exceedingly important.

Leach, however, is getting the short shrift. He's a credible, serious guy, who was part of the House Republican caucus for decades, and this year, Leach concluded that Obama is the leader the nation needs.

Maybe he's too mild-mannered to generate more attention (he did not, for example, mention "spitballs" during his speech last night). Maybe if he'd challenged Chris Matthews to a duel, news outlets would have taken his remarks more seriously.

But that's a genuine shame, because Leach had a message worth listening to: "As a Republican, I stand before you with deep respect for the history and traditions of my political party. But it is clear to all Americans that something is out of kilter in our great republic.... Seldom has the case for an inspiring new political ethic been more compelling. And seldom has an emerging leader so matched the needs of the moment.... I stand before you proud of my party's contributions to American history but, as a citizen, proud as well of the good judgment of good people in this good party, in nominating a transcending candidate, an individual whom I am convinced will recapture the American dream and be a truly great president: the senator from Abraham Lincoln's state -- Barack Obama.... This is not a time for politics as usual.... Obama will recapture the American dream and be a truly great president."

Ted Kennedy is on stage at the DNC right now! Speaking to the crowd!

How many 76-year-old men do you know could have brain surgery a couple months ago and take the stage to make a speech?

*sniff* I have something in my eye, excuse me.

ETA: Joe Biden seems to have something in his eye too.

SCREW THE MEDIA

Yes, this includes you, MSNBC!

All I've heard about all night is oh, the poor Hillary supporters. Poor them. And their little hurt feelings. And how will it affect the convention.

WELL, GODDAMMIT, IF YOU STOPPED TALKING ABOUT IT, MAYBE THEY'D GET OVER IT!

And MSNBC was so busy worrying about the Clintonistas that they couldn't even get the AUDIO TO WORK WHEN SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE PELOSI CAME OUT TO SPEAK.

Screw you all. I'm flipping over to C-Span and staying there.

Watching Barack's half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng speak now. Damn, she's gorgeous.
