Here's my semi-regular freakout at how quickly time is passing.

Holy crap, y'all, it's September!

My team leader's kids went back to school today! It's almost fall. And the holidays and all that junk again!

Didn't we just do all this?

God, the summer just blew by. I just can't believe it. I mean, I know I can go back and read my journal entries and prove there was a summer 2008, but I still can't actually believe it.

And I'm back at work after 4 straight days off. Yeah, lovely.

Know what I was doing 15 years ago today?

Graduating from college.

Crap. I am old.

Of course, so is [info]occasionaldemon, who was right there too.

Our speaker was James Earl Jones. Yes, he was totally made of awesome. When James Earl Jones quotes Shakespeare, an entire English department swoons visibly.

Yesterday was Macaulay Culkin's birthday. He turned 27.

Today is Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Reuben's birthday. He is 55.

I'm gonna go put my teeth in a glass of water and lie down now.

I found this item via the Relevant or True blog:
Tuesday marks the 15th anniversary of the day that Los Angeles Lakers superstar and eventual Hall of Famer Magic Johnson announced he was HIV-positive.

NBC4's Dr. Bruce Hensel said that some people believe Johnson has survived because he could afford the medicines needed to combat the incurable disease.
I remember hearing the news. I had a radio show at UEA during my junior year abroad in England. The news started at the top of the hour, and the first line of the first story was, "Magic Johnson has AIDS." My stomach dropped.

Unfortunately I had a Queen song set up for after the news, and of course we all know what happened to Freddie Mercury. (Wikipedia has his death happening long after November 7, but I guess the rumors were flying at that point.)

Check out the MSNBC article. It details how much has changed in AIDS research since then. And Magic is still going strong.

(And I can't believe there are things in my life that I remember so well that happened fifteen years ago.)

Huhwhat now?

  1. My parents accepted an offer on their house (where I lived from ages 15 through 24, then again from 27 to 29).
  2. My parents have put in an offer on a new much smaller house, that's a bit closer to Mom's work. If the house inspection on their current home goes well, we may be having Thanksgiving dinner with them in the new house. Holy God, y'all, the kitchen is so tiny.
  3. My father put in for Social Security. My father is retiring. He will still have to work part-time, but Mom says he might be able to work with a good pal of his. And of course he'll still have the tax prep business from January to April. (Need a CPA? Let me know.)
  4. And I realized that next year my mother turns 60.

I read this article, and man, this is so true:
We're a nation of Peter Pans who won't grow up.

And there's nothing with wrong with that, author Christopher Noxon says.

The Los Angeles writer, 37, has a term to describe what he calls "a new breed of adult, identified by a determination to remain playful, energetic and flexible in the face of adult responsibilities." Say hello to the "rejuvenile."

Noxon's new book, Rejuvenile: Kickball, Cartoons, Cupcakes, and the Reinvention of the American Grown-up (Crown, $23.95), on sale Tuesday, attempts to explain how the desire to keep alive "a child-like essence" is changing how American adults behave.

In his book, Noxon notes:

• Half the visitors to Disney World are adults with no children. He interviews a number of fanatics, including a 47-year-old judge from Dayton, Ohio, who with his wife usually spends a weekend a month at a Disney theme park.

• Multinational corporations are hiring consultants to promote play in the workplace as a spur to creativity, innovation and morale.

• There is a surge in retro toys such as Strawberry Shortcake. Popular in the 1980s, Strawberry Shortcake was relaunched in this century with the line "Who knew you and your daughter would have the same best friend?"...
This whole endless putting off of adulthood troubles me a bit. Thirty-year-olds now think it's OK to live with their parents. "50 is the new 30." Parents don't want to be parents, they want to be their kids' best friends, and now they're even trying to dress like them. It's just odd.

Minorly not great news

Item 1: Hubby called this past Friday night and found out he wasn't going to have to go to jury duty Monday (yesterday) after all! Then yesterday he found out he was supposed to call every night. He got picked for today. I sent him off with a Kit Kat bar and the first two Chronicles of Narnia books to try and lighten the load. But he's really not happy about it.

Item 2: Did I forget to mention that my hairdresser -- while she was doing my highlights on June 3 -- found a gray hair? Yippee. At least it will blend in to my highlights, and Sunny says it's soft, not that hard kinky gray hair you sometimes see. Maybe I'll luck out and go gray the way my aunt and dad did. They have really nice gray hair. Gray hair. Igggh.

Congrats to the Bus

One of the things that has been bugging the hell out of me ,while watching a perfectly good playoff series, is all the attention paid to Jerome Bettis' age. All the color guys say "he's so old" and "will he retire" and "you know, he's not a young guy anymore."

The son of a bitch is 2 months and 9 days younger than I am.

Old enough

Hey, remember when I was complaining about being old enough to be the mother of most of the people on LiveJournal?

Found this LiveJournal user stats site. Scroll down to see the graph of the age distribution. It's actually a bit older than I thought it would be. So I'm not quite old enough to be these people's mother. Perhaps their unwed mother.
